The Regiments of the Indian Army Armoured Corps since 1950

On partition in 1947 half of The Governor-General’s Bodyguard and twelve regiments (1^st, 2^nd, 3^rd, 4^th, 7^th, 8^th, 9^th, 14^th, 16^th, 17^th, 18^th and 21^st) were allocated to India.

In 1950 India became a republic and regimental designations with reference to royalty were changed as were the badges.

When more armoured regiments were raised, first the gaps were left vacant. Only the 20^th Lancers was re-raised as such in 1956. Around the same time new regiments were designated as Cavalry, but only the 61^st Cavalry was a real cavalry regiment. Later new regiments were all designated as Armoured Regiment.

From 1983 the old gaps (5^th, 6^th, 10^th, 11^th, 12^th, 13^th, 15^th and 19^th) were filled, but these regiments claim no connection with the former, pre-partition ones.
