The Creation of the Territorial Army (TA) from 1920 to 1922

In 1920 fifty-four yeomanry regiments of the TF were reconstituted and in the next year transferred to the Territorial Army (TA). In the few following years there were many changes because much less cavalry was needed in the future.

The fourteen most senior regiments were kept as cavalry.

Eight regiments were reduced and converted to the 19th - 26th Armoured Car Companies of The Tank Corps.

Seven pairs of regiments were amalgamated and together with eight other regiments they formed fifteen brigades in the Royal Field Artillery. Two regiments were reduced to each a battery in a Royal Field Artillery brigade. One regiment became a brigade in the Royal Garrison Artillery. One regiment reduced to a battery in a Royal Horse Artillery brigade. This makes a total of twenty-six regiments converted into artillery.

One regiment became a Royal Signals unit.

The three Highland regiments were converted to Scouts. The two Lovat’s Scouts regiments were then amalgamated.

One regiment merged into a TA infantry battalion. One regiment was disbanded.
