The Volunteer Cavalry and Royal Armoured Corps of the British Army
The Regiments of the Territorial Army (TA) in 1939
In 1938 the eight Armoured Car Companies were ordered to increase to battalion strength. They
reverted to their old titles. The one regiment in the Supplementary Reserve was also recreated.
Six infantry TA battalions were converted into the 40th - 45th TA battalions of the Royal Tank Corps.
In April 1939 The Royal Armoured Corps was created and all armoured units became part of it.
The Royal Tank Corps was renamed Royal Tank Regiment. At the same time the doubling of the TA was ordered.
