At the end of Queen Victoria’s reign there were 31 cavalry regiments. Three Household Cavalry regiments (which had still no cap badges), seven regiments of Dragoon Guards and twenty-one regiments of Dragoons (three), Hussars (twelve) and Lancers (six).
As many first line troops were send to South Africa, short lived Royal Reserve Regiments were raised to replace them.
