The Rifle Volunteers from 1859 to 1880

The Consolidation of the Rifle Volunteers in 1880

From the Consolidation of 1880 to the creation of the Territorial Force in 1908

The Volunteer units as parts of the territorial regiments 1881-1914

flag-UnitedKingdom-1801

In 1881 at the creation of the two battalion, territorial related, regular regiments, the Rifle Volunteers were added to those regiments as volunteer battalions. This can be seen in the first column.

In the years that followed they were retitled as Volunteer Battalions of the parent regiments, numbered in a sequence separate from the regular and militia battalions. Not all corps followed this pattern and those got their designation changed fom Rifle Volunteer Corps (shortened here as RVC) into Volunteer Rifle Corps (here as VRC) in 1891. Also some corps were transfrerred to other regiments, disbanded, or raised in this period. This is covered in the middle column.

At the creation of the Territorial Force (TF) in 1908 all the volunteer units (with the exception of the 7th (Isle of Man) Volunteer Battalion, The King’s (Liverpool Regiment)) became numbered battalions of their regiment in the sequence after the regular and Special Reserve battalions. A few adjustments were made later (e.g. some TF only regiments were created) and the last column shows this and the few changes that occurred until 1914.

The notation is short for the regimental title that forms the heading of a section.
