The Volunteer Infantry of the British Army

The Rifle Volunteers from 1859 to 1880

The Consolidation of the Rifle Volunteers in 1880

From the Consolidation of 1880 to the creation of the Territorial Force in 1908

The consolidated and renumbered Rifle Volunteer Corps as at the end of 1880 are in the first column of the table below.

In 1881 at the creation of the two battalion, territorial related, regular regiments, the Rifle Volunteers were added to those regiments as volunteer battalions. In the years that followed this was implemented and they were retitled as Volunteer Battions of the parent regiments, numbered in a sequence separate from the regular and militia battalions. Not all corps followed this pattern and those got their designation changed fom Rifle Volunteer Corps into Volunteer Rifle Corps in 1891. The middle column shows these changes before the conversion into the TF or before disbandment.

At the creation of the Territorial Force (TF) in 1908 all the volunteer units (with the exception of the 7th (Isle of Man) Volunteer Battalion, The King’s (Liverpool Regiment)) became numbered battalions of their regiment in the sequence after the regular and Special Reserve battalions. A few adjustments were made later (e.g. some TF only regiments were created) and the last column shows the battalions as in 1909. Secondary titles are omitted, except where this would create confusion (as with The King’s (Liverpool Regiment) and The King’s (Shropshire Light Infantry)).
