From the Napoleonic Wars to the 1881 Reorganisation

The reductions after the Napoleonic Wars resulted in the the 1^st Foot Guards having three battalions, the 2^nd and 3^rd Foot Guards and the 1^st and 60^th Foot and The Rifle Brigade having two battalions. All other line regiments had one battalion.

In 1823/24 the 94^th - 99^th Foot were added to the establishment.

In 1842 and 1846 Reserve Battalions were created from the regimental depots of several regiments. These battalions were in fact used for normal service. The scheme was abandoned within a few years and the Reserve Battalions merged back into their parent battalions.

In 1855 the 60^th Foot and The Rifle Brigade got a 3^rd battalion.

The Crimean War and the Great Mutiny led to the raising of 2^nd battalions for the 2^nd - 25^th Foot and 4^th battalions for the 60^th Foot and The Rifle Brigade. Also the 100^th Foot was added.

in 1862 the erstwhile European Regiments of the East India Company were taken into the line as the 101^st - 109^th Foot.
