Regiments of the Militia in 1833 and 1855

In order to settle the order of precedence permanently in 1833 a new ballot was drawn, the King attending, for all the militia regiments (thus not counties) in one list (Ireland no longer having it's own).
To introduce some sense of seniority, the list was split into three groups. This is shown in the first column in the table below.

The 1852 Militia Act introduced artillery and engineers additionaly to infantry militia. In the years that followed, apart from raising new artillery regiments, eleven existing regiments were converted into artillery. Also since 1833 new regiments had been raised. In 1855 the list was revised. The Artillery got it's own list numbered in alphabetical order. In the Infantry list some corrections were made, the gaps were filled and a few were added at the end. The erstwhile division in seniority groups was not adhered to. Many regiments got their designations changed, e.g. on becoming Light Infantry or Rifles. This is all reflected in the second column of the table below.

These precedence numbers were not to be used alone, they are to be seen as secondary titles, the names were always to be used.
