The Reorganisation of 1921-1923

After the Great War, the NZEF was demobilised and in 1921 a new organisation was anounced. The number of units was reduced from seventeen to twelve by merging.
These were designated as battalions of four "large" regiments along the same lines as the NZEF regiments.
This was not popular and in 1923 the battalions became again regiments in their own right. The new names were based on the old ones, but the numbers were dropped and the erstwhile secondary titles were used as the discerning element in the new designations.
