The Infantry Regiments of the British Army

The Creation of the Territorial Regiments in 1881

The Cardwell and Childers reforms culminated in the complete reorganisation of the infantry. The regiments were bound to a recruting area. Each new regiment would incorporate all Regular, Militia and Volunteer Rifle units in such an area. This became known as the Territorial Regimental System (not to be confused with the Territorial Force/Army). Such a new regiment consisted of a pair (or two pairs in some cases) of regular battalions, the Militia Regiments of the area (as numbered Battalions after the Regular Battailons) and the Rifles Volunteer Corps of the area (termed Volunteer Battalions, the process of re-designating these into a separate numbered sequence of Volunteer Battalions started later).
