The Territorial Force was responsible for the defence of the home land against a Japanese invasion and was mobilised. Most regiments raised extra battalions. The 2nd Battalion, The Hawkes Bay Regiment became The Ruahine Regiment and a new 2nd Battalion was raised in The Hawkes Bay Regiment.

The invasion threat gone and manpower needed for the NZEF and the industry, all battalions were disbanded in 1943.

In 1948 the Territorial Force was resurrected. There were two amalgamations and in 1950 one unit merged into an armoured regiment. This reduced the number of regiments to nine.

The Infantry had a regular part since 1947. In 1964 this consisted of 1st Battalion and the depot of the New Zealand Regiment. In that year the territorial regiments were reduced to six and made the 2nd - 7th Battalion of this regiment. The regiment was made Royal: Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment.
