After the Great War, the NZEF was demobilised and in 1921 a new organisation was anounced. The number of Mounted Rifle regiments was reduced from twelve to nine by merging. They were numbered 1st - 9th New Zealand Mounted Rifles.
In 1927 the names were changed by dropping the numbers and using the erstwhile secondary titles as the discerning element in the new designations.
